Brook eyes 'superstar' status (BBC SPORTS)

07/07/2012 15:15
The 26-year-old meets American Carson Jones, who is ranked three in the world, in an IBF world title eliminator in Sheffield on Saturday. "I could be British boxing's next superstar," Brook said. "The Americans are starting to hear about me, so I want to be making a statement in this fight and taking care of Carson in style." Although Brook is ranked two places below Jones in the rankings, he has won all of his 27 fights and is favourite to extend that run in his home town. "We know he is probably going to be my toughest fight to date," Brook added. "This is a chance to earn even more recognition by beating a guy who is well respected." Brook tipped the scales at the weigh-in at Sheffield's Winter Gardens at 10st 6lb 10oz, with Jones 4oz lighter. The face-off afterwards was an ugly affair, with a chattering Brook making to headbutt his opponent. Jones reacted badly and the pair had to be separated. Jones, 25, later claimed he has a psychological advantage over Brook and has upset his mental preparation. "I know I'm getting in his head and I think that has something to do with his maturity levels," Jones said. "I'm a better fighter because of the hard times. He's been hand-fed all of his opponents while I've had to come through the hard way. "As a result, I've learned a lot and am a better fighter and a better man for that."
